Dr. Helmut KETTENMANN
Dr. Helmut KETTENMANN is Senior Professor at the Charité-University Medicine Berlin. He is also the Principle Investigator of the Brain Cognition and Brain Disease Institute at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Science (SIAT).
He has been a Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2003, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal GLIA since 1987, and former President of the German Neuroscience Society.
Prof. Kettenmann published 357 papers, including papers in well-known journals, such as Nature, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Medicine, and Neuron. H-factor at the Web of Science is 92. The highest cited paper, published in Nature Neuroscience, has 2293 citations.
The Kettenmann lab has been studying the functions of all three major types of glial cells in the brain, the astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglial cells. A major recent focus of the lab is on the role of microglial cells in the normal and the pathologic brain.

Dr. Xiang got her master’s degree from the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in 2013. She joined Prof. Dr. Christian Haass’ lab at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU) for her Ph.D. study. Afterward, she collaborated with Dr. med. Matthias Brendel, the head of clinical research at the Hospital of LMU, and with Prof. Dr. Christian Haass for her postdoctoral research. In 2021, she returned to China and joined the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Xiang’s research focuses on understanding the role of microglia cells in physiology and pathology, especially in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD). She combined molecular research in different mouse models with human clinical imaging data to explore the microglia-specific activities in neurodegenerative diseases.
She is collaborating with one of the pioneers of glial research, Prof. Helmut Kettenmann, to establish a lab focusing on microglia.
