Prof. Eleonore Köhler
Maastricht University

Position: Programme coordinator Master Biomedical Sciences

Leo Köhler studied biology (Göttingen, Germany; Basle, Switzerland) and received her PhD in 1990 for the thesis titled: “Probing the substrate specificity of E. coli aspartate aminotransferase by site-directed mutagenesis”. Following a postdoc period in Hannover on Protein-DNA Interactions, she had two positions as senior researcher in Basle where she studied cardiac fibrosis and hepatoblastoma. In 2002, she joined a NUTRIM research group at Maastricht University as senior researcher. Her research focuses on Amino-acid metabolism in inflammatory diseases and development. She is co-promoter of 7 PhD students. Over the years she received national and EU grants for app. 900 k€.
Leo Köhler teaches histology and basic anatomy in many UM-curricula. Since 2006 she is acting head and since 2011 head of the department of Anatomy & Embryology. She was a member of the planning committee of the master Molecular Life Sciences and has been active as a lecturer, tutor, coach, block coordinator and member of the Educational committee within the programme. In 2008 she took over the programme coordination and became a member of the Management team BMW/MLS. In 2011 she has won the FHML Education price for her role in this programme.
