Introduction of Medical Immunology

Immunology is a science that involves the immunological defense, immunological homeostasis, and immunological surveillance, covering the areasof the composition and function of immune systems. With the immunologicaltheoretical and technical interactions with other disciplines, such asmolecular biology, cellular biology, genetics and biochemistry, etc.,immunology has developed rapidly over last 50 years, and become one of thefastest growing disciplines. Medical immunology is located at the cutting edgeof the life science, a

nd is closely intertwined with all the disciplines ofclinical medicine in the 21 Century. The immunological theory and techniqueshave been extensively applied to many other areas of life science and medicine. Immunology is also an important basic and applied discipline to many otherdisciplines such as biology, basic medicine, clinical medicine, preventivemedicine and veterinary science, etc.

In Medical School of Southeast University, Immunology is an academicdegree course, and contains 50 hours of theoretical lectures that will belectured in classroom, as well as 16 hours of technical experiments that willbe learned in laboratory. Usually, it is set up in Spring semester, and you canreceive 3.5 credits after you have finished the study of Medical immunology andpassed through the examination. Southeast University has been authorized toconfer master's degrees in immunology since 1990, and doctor's degrees inimmunology since 2005. There are 6 professors and six associate professors withdistinguished credentials to mentor master or doctor students in Immunology. Inthe past few years, the faculty members and the students have made remarkableaccomplishments in the fields of infection immunity& Vaccine development, tumor immunology & tumor stem cells, immunopathology & transplantationimmunology, and cancer biomarkers & New techniques in immunologicaldiagnose and therapy, etc. Our faculty have acquired a lot of funds, such asone grants from the National 863 program of China, two grants from the Nationalsub-863 program of China, one grant from the sub-973 National Nature ScienceFoundation of China, and more than twenty grants from the National Natural ScienceFoundations of China for the past few years. On behalf of our teaching team, Iwould like to say it includes 4 professors, of which Prof. Sun comes from KingCollege, London, British, and 7 associate professors, 2 lecturers and 2 Lab technicians, and they are ready for Medical immunology teaching.
