Clinical medicine

Clinical medicine is a discipline that studies the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of diseases; it also improves the level of clinical treatment, and promotes human health. The Clinical Medicine Department of Southeast University was founded in 1935. After the passage of many years, the comprehensive development of medicine, teaching, research and management has become one of the important subjects of Southeast University. In 2011, clinical medicine entered the top 1% of ESI global rankings, and became the fifth disciple at Southeast University to enter this be rated this highly. Clinical medicine is a first-level doctoral program and is Jiangsu Province’s 12th Five-Year Plan key discipline focus area. Meanwhile the critical care medicine discipline achieved national level clinical key specialty. Neurology, critical care medicine, nephrology, medical imaging and interventional radiology, and hematology were awarded the12th Five-Year Plan Jiangsu Provincial key discipline focus area. Moreover, there are outstandingexperts, such asNational Outstanding Youth Science Fund Scholars, Ministry of Health awarded Outstanding Experts and Jiangsu medical leaders. Clinical medicine includes 18 directions, these directions are as follows: internal medicine, pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry and mental health, imaging medicine and nuclear medicine, clinical laboratory diagnostics, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, oncology, anesthesiology, emergency, general medicine, dermatology and sexually transmitted diseases, clinical pathology, geriatrics, rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy. Molecular imaging and functional imaging, clinical neuropsychiatry, interventional and minimally invasive treatment, internal medicine major diseases, especially the pathogenesis and prevention strategies of diabetic nephropathy, coronary heart disease and viral hepatitis; the mechanisms of multiple organ failure and functional reconstruction have formed distinct academic characteristics. In addition, these breakthroughs have achieved a large number of important achievements, some of which are at leading position and exert an important influence in terms of technology and research nationwide.

Basic Medicine

Basic medical science has been a key discipline of Medical School in Southeastern University. This discipline is running master program now. After more than two decade’s developments, the discipline is well equipped and established, especially inimmunology, pathogenic biology, pathology and pathophysiology, human anatomy and histology and embryology, neuropharmacology, medical molecular biology.Forty-five faculty members are included in this division currently, and their research interesting includes the following directions: the infection immunity and vaccine development, tumor immunology and cancer stem cells, transplantation immunity, new technologies for developing tumor markers and treatment, molecular pathology of organ fibrosis, neuro-inflammation, nerve injury and repair, bio nano-materials.

Nursing

Nursing discipline is a comprehensive and applicable discipline based on natural science, social science theory and humanities, researching the theory, knowledge, skills and development law of maintaining, promoting as well as restoring human health. Nursing discipline is dedicated to cultivating modern advanced nurse specialists to meet the need of nursing development in the 21st century, it aims to cultivate nurse specialists with rich experience in clinical nursing, independence in judgment and scientific research in fields of nursing education, nursing management and clinical nursing through theoretical study and clinical practice, to promote the development of nursing profession and human health.

Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the study of drugs - what they are, how they work and what they do. It includes the study of the manner in which the function of living tissues and organisms is modified by chemical substances and the study of the effect of chemical agents on living processes.The study of pharmacology requires intimate knowledge of the biological system affected. With the knowledge ofcell biology andbiochemistry increasing, the field of pharmacology has also changed substantially.If you are a highly motivated and curious student who is fascinated with the life sciences and enjoys problem solving-then explore pharmacology.Students of pharmacology are trained as researchers, studying the effects of substances in order to better understand the mechanisms which might lead to new drug discoveries.

Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is a discipline characterized with wide coverage and high integrity. It closely related with each department of clinic and is the cornerstone of clinic practice. The scope of internal medicine covers respiratory, circulatory, digestive, urinary, blood, endocrine, rheumatic and infectious diseases and disease caused by physical and chemical factors.

Surgery

Professional master degree of surgery in clinical medicine is a new model for training surgical diplomate. On the basis of master education, students receive surgical specialist training and grasp the skills for diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and follow-up of surgical common diseases. Students also need to have the prelimary understanding and experience of the diagnosis and treatment of rare surgical or incurable diseases, and first aid of acute and critical illness. Students will grasp skilled surgical operation techniques, can teach medical undergraduates as well as lower-level physician, have clinical research capabilities and thesis writing ability, and can read the specialized English papers.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Obstetrics and Gynecology are one of a clinical discipline specialized in female-specific physiological / pathological changes and birth control.Department of gynecology and obstetricswas original from the Central University, School of Medicine, and conferred the right to master awarded in 1985 by the State Council. The structure of our disciplinary team including 75% of teachers who have mater or doctor degree and 6 master advisors. There are 8 staffs served as the directors, deputies and associate directors of the national study group, provincial and ministerial professional committees, 9 staffs as deputies and associate directors of city professional committees.This specialty is the key clinical specialist in Jiangsu province. Three professional areas including medicine, teaching and research are at the advanced level domestic.  

Pediatrics

Pediatrics is a study of the growth and development of the child from birth to adolescence, and disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention and the promotion of physical and mental health of medical science. Pediatrics got a master's degree awarded in 1986.After more than half a century of construction and development, It has trained a large number of medical and scientific research personnel all over the home and abroad, and made great achievements in medical research and clinical medical staff.  

Neurology

Neurology is the second subject field of clinical medicine, which is associated with highly logical and theoretical. It investigates the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and skeletal muscle diseases, including the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation and prevention of specialized disciplines. The discipline of Neurology could be traced the source to 1948 and is the sole keydepartment ofneurology affiliated to the national Ministry of Railways from 1988. It has been authorized as Clinical Pharmacological institution by the State Drug Administration since 2004, and already established Neuropsychiatric Research Institute of Southeast University.  

Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a clinical object about the study of occurrence, development, outcome, prophylactic, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of optic apparatus.The department of ophthalmology has 3 tutors for master degree students. All staff is rich in clinic work, research and teaching.

Oncology

Oncology is a secondary discipline, in the field of clinical medicine is based on the comprehensive medical knowledge, study the causes of tumor, especially malignant tumor), prevention, diagnosis, treatment and basic research of specialized subject. Oncology department in Southeast University was established in 1992, the clinical oncology center, established in 2003, set up two clinical professional radiotherapy, chemotherapy, the clinical 74 beds.

Emergency and Critical Care Medicine

Emergency and critical care medicine is a secondary discipline in the field of clinical medicine based on the comprehensive medical knowledge. It is a specialized discipline focusing on the assessment and intervention treatment of critical ill patients in order to prevent its deterioration, discussing the characteristics and inherent law of disease progression to cause organ damage, meanwhile, starting the intervention and treatment timely in the early stage of organ damage.

Traditional Chinese Internal Medicine

It is Traditional Chinese Internal Medicine that a fundamental clinical discipline based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory not only elaborates causes and pathogenesis, syndrome characteristics, treatment based on syndrome differentiation as well as prevention and rehabilitation methods of diseases but also lays the foundations for learning and study other clinical subjects of TCM. If you have completed all the researches and curriculums, which are undertaken by teaching and research room of TCM in the Southeast University and acupuncture, internal medicine department and orthopedic of TCM in Zhongda Hospital which is affiliated of Southeast University, you will be awarded a master degree of secondary discipline. 

Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is the traditionary second grade discipline of clinical medicine, and has extensive relationship with many clinical disciplines. Now, it has divided some sub-disciplines, such as otology, rhinology, pharyngology, laryngology, head and neck surgery, children otorhinolaryngology, and craniofacial plastic surgery, etc. Many of sub-disciplines conclude some branches. At present, the research is concerned with foundation and clinic of rhinology, audiology, oncology and minimally invasive surgery of head and neck.  

Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology is a close combination of basic medicine and clinical medicine discipline, its main tasks are providing security for clinical departments carry out invasive treatment, providing comfortable service for a variety of inspection and treatment, providing life support for critically ill patients. It is subject for one of the three major medical function (rescue the dying, heal the wounded, treatment disease). As a second discipline awarded Master’s degree, anesthesiology department of Southeast University School of Medicine has accumulated a wealth of clinical and teaching experience, and formed a complete set of teaching and training system through long-term construction.

Psychiatry and Mental Health

Psychiatry and mental health is clinic medicine subject which focus on the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, development law, treatment and rehabilitation of all the mental disorders. The research content include biology and psychology research, for example biogenetics、neurochemistry、psychopharmacology、electrophysiology、brain image and epidemiological、community-based rehabilitation technique、psychosomatic disease and psychological treatment and so on. The discipline of Psychiatry was established in 2005 as the first psychiatry department in the general hospital of Jiangsu province.  

Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine

The medical imaging & nuclear medicine is the subordinate discipline of medicine, which evaluates the function of organs, explores the occurrence, development and outcome of the diseases by various imaging technologies, and performs the image-guided minimally invasive procedures for diagnosis and treatment as well.The Department of the imaging and nuclear medicine at Southeast University is a national leader inpatient care,research, andeducation. Our department is the only national key clinical specialty vocational school in Jiangsu Province and the Province Key Interventional Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Jiangsu, and directs the Image Quality Control Center of Jiangsu Province to establish the protocols for medical image quality control as well.Our department was awarded as the Province Key Discipline in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development, the Province Advantage Discipline in the Twelfth Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development of Jiangsu, respectively. 

Diagnostics of Clinical Laboratory

This discipline is a sub-discipline of clinical medicine. At present, the division has a total staff of twenty-five mentors, among them, five are professors, fifteen are associate professors and nine have doctor degrees. Three Ph. D and ten MD supervisors are currently working in this division.We are interested in these following research areas: polymorphism and coronary heart disease; tumor immunology; laboratory diagnosis of leukemia; molecular immunology; gene cloning and recombination technologies in clinical diagnosis.

III.Degree Award

3.1 Ph.D.’s Degree Award Requirements

Basic Criteria

I. Definition of achievements

The achievements of the Ph.D. applicants refer to academic papers published after admission of the doctoral program of Southeast University, scientific research awards obtained, authorized invention patents, and other achievements identified by the school degree assessment committee. The achievements used to apply for a Ph.D. should be related to the content of the Ph.D. thesis.

II. The journal certification standard

1. Academic papers of doctoral applicants should be published in SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI,EI, MI, CSSCI (core version), CSCD (core version), Chinese core journals overview(The source journal of the Peking University Library, which is based on the version of the year in which the paper was published) (called source journal in the following part), but does not include the publication of special supplements, special issues, etc. of these academic journals.

2. Paper(s) published in academic journals sponsored by Southeast University will be only considered as one paper.

3. “Source publication” in this standard refers to SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI, EI, MI, CSSCI(core version), CSCD (core version), Chinese core journals overview (edited by Peking University Library) Source Journal of Chinese and foreign search systems (checkable in relevant Chinese and foreign databases). The source publication, the JCR partition and impact factor of the journal is based on the situation on the publication year of the paper (the zoning and impact factor for the year is based on the latest data at the time if there is no newly released information of the year for a doctoral student applying for the Ph.D)

III. The signature of scientific research achievements

1. Southeast University must be the first signature unit of the academic papers of the doctoral applicants, that is, the first author of the paper and the first signature unit of the first correspondence author must be “Southeast University” or “an institution of Southeast University”. Unless otherwise noted, the degree applicant must be the first author of the academic paper.

2. Southeast University must be the first signature unit of the research award certificate submitted by the doctoral candidate. The applicant must be the main performer and has a personal award certificate.

3. Southeast University must be the first owner of the invention patent right for the invention patent certificate submitted by the doctoral applicant, the doctoral applicant must be the first inventor or the tutor is the first inventor, and the applicant is the second inventor.

Assessment Criteria

When applying for a Ph.D. degree in medical field, a doctoral candidate must meet one of the following conditions:

1.Publish a journal paper in Q1 district of JCR partition table that specifies the corresponding subject or a SCIE/SSCI source journal article with journal impact factor ≥5.0

2.Publish two papers in the SCIE/SSCI source journal, at least one of which is the Q2 district journal paper in the corresponding subject area specified in the JCR partition table.

3.Published three academic papers in SCIE/SSCI Source Journal or Chinese Medical Association series journals or Medline journals or EI/CSCD (core edition) source journals, including at least two academic papers by SCIE/SSCI and accumulated journal impact factor ≥ 3.0.

4.Publish an academic paper in a journal with an impact factor ≥10.0 can meet the requirement for two students who are the first two in the list of authors and co-first authors to apply for doctoral degree, but their doctoral thesis content cannot be the same.

Related Instructions

I. The results of the Ph.D. applicants should be officially published or published or authorized.When applying for a Ph.D., the originals of the journals in which the academic papers are located and other results must be provided, including the proof of the papers issued by the school library. The academic papers published in the EI Source Journal must be included in EI. The document type of academic papers included in EI should be the Journal Article in principle; the document type of academic papers included in SCIE/SSCI/A&HCI should be Article or Review or Letter; Academic papers included in SCIE/SSCI/A&HCI/EI must be retrieved in the corresponding database and have a search number. Academic papers officially published in the Q1 and Q2 journals in the corresponding subject areas of the JCR partition table may be deemed to be included in the SCIE/SSCI, but must be presented with certificate that the paper was officially published and the JCR report of the journal.

II. Other achievements of doctoral students can be equivalent in terms of the following rules. All equivalents can only be used once, specifically:

1. The papers reprinted by the full text of Xinhua Digest, Chinese Social Science Digest, College of Arts and Sciences of Higher Education (original titled Digest of Liberal Arts of Colleges and Universities), and Reprint of Newspapers and Periodicals of People's University (first author, more than 3000 word for the body of the paper). It can be equivalent to the publication of a CSSCI (core version) source journal paper, which has been published in the CSSCI (core version) source journal.

2. A Published academic paper in the theoretical version of People's Daily, Guangming Daily, Wenhui Daily and China Education News (first author, more than 2000 words) can be considered as a paper published in CSSCI(core version).

3. Receiving second-class and above research awards at the provincial and ministerial level (applicants are the main performers and have personal award certificate) can be equivalent to an article published in the EI source journal by EI or equivalent to a CSSCI (core version) / CSCD (core version) source journal article.

III. Doctoral students designated by the China Scholarship Council or with the school's consent to jointly training programs (with a joint training agreement), under the guidance of the partner professor, engaged in the research of the partner’s object and published SCIE/SSCI/A&HCI paper with the doctoral candidate as the first author, the first signed unit is Southeast University, and the communication author can be the partner tutor. The jointly training doctoral student can calculate the achievements according to the following regulations when applying for a doctoral degree, the following can be considered at most one paper, which are:

1) For science, engineering, medicine and management doctoral students, published one source journal article in SCIE/SSCI/A&HCI journals above can be considered as an EI/CSCD (core version) source journal paper or published two source journal articles in SCIE/SSCI/A&HCI journals above being a SCIE/SSCI/ A&HCI source papers.

IV. The sub-degrees sub-committee of each discipline may, on the basis of this assessment standard, propose higher requirements for the degree conferred by the discipline, and report to the Office of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee for approval.

V. The tutor may put forward higher requirements on the basis of the assessment criteria required by the discipline degree evaluation subcommittee, and report to the discipline degree assessment subcommittee for approval.

VI. Ph.D. students who publish academic papers at the International Conference of Disciplinary Authorities (thesis must be included by SCIE or SSCI or A&HCI or EI) or Ph.D. students as major accomplishers who obtain significant or landmark results can be considered specifically when applying for Ph.D..

VII. Applicants who have not met the doctoral application criteria for their results will be required to submit the results materials and the final version of the doctoral thesis in accordance with the requirements of the corresponding doctoral application within the prescribed time limit. The committee and the school degree assessment committee review their degree issues in accordance with the relevant procedures and will not be accepted after the deadline.

VIII. For doctoral candidates applying for Ph.D. in new subjects after the announcement of this assessment standard, additional standard shall be supplemented separately.

IX. This assessment standard has been implemented since the beginning of the spring of 2018. PhD students enrolled before 2018 should follow the original standards.

X. This assessment standard is interpreted by the Postgraduate Department.

Appendix: Criteria of Subject Degree Assessment Subcommittee

Sub-committee in Medicine and Biology

When applying for a degree by a doctoral candidate in a medical field, it will be in accordance with the standards of medical subjects in the school's achievement assessment program.

When applying for a degree in a doctoral program in biology, it will be in accordance with the standards of biology in the school's achievement assessment program.

Journals in the biology field of the Nature Index are listed in Appendix 6.

3.2 Master’s degree award requirements

Master's degree conferring points and postgraduate tutors:

For the development of discipline construction and postgraduate education in our college, in order to further standardize the management of postgraduate degree and education, and toimprove the quality of postgraduate education continuously, the following requirements are set out for the final results of the master’s thesis and the publication of the thesis when the degree is awarded,. These requirements are based on the strict implementation of the Southeast University Graduate Handbook, according to the specific conditions of the medical school, and referring to the School of Research Students [2009] No. 46 Document of the Graduate School of Southeast University.

All graduate students must: pass the corresponding clinical or teaching practice ability assessments; complete the research topics designated by their tutors and steering groups, write the dissertations, which are signed by the instructor and reviewed by experts; achieve the level of English ability which is acquired for master's degree awarded by Southeast University; achieve one of the following requirements of thesis publication or results assessment. Only then they can apply for the thesis defense.

Master of Science degree:

1.The first author has contributed more than one paper related to the content of dissertation at or above the provincial level (including provincial and above academic conferences, inter-school academic conferences, intra-school academic conferences, and Science and Technology Online three-star and above).

2.The first author has contributed more than one articles related to the content of the dissertation to one of the core journals of China science and technology, and has been notified of publication.

3.The second author has contributed more than one articles related to the content of the dissertation and has been published or published online in the Chinese Science Citation Database of Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) (including Medline, PubMed, EI, SCI and Chinese Medical Journal) . The tutor is the first author;

4.The relevant content of the dissertation has been summarized and written to SCI magazine ( as first author), and the magazine draft number is obtained.

5.Received the top 5 in scientific and technological achievements awards at the provincial and ministerial level and the top 3 in national invention patents.

6. When the doctoral tutor or the master tutor who undertakes the major projects of the National Natural Science Foundation or above believes that graduate students can use the papers to meet the needs of publishing high-level papers, the graduate students and tutors are supposed to jointly submit the exemption to the academic committee 2 months before the thesis defense, and the academic committee will review the dissertation and consider it has reached the level of master's degree.

Master of Clinical Medicine and 7-year Clinical Medicine:

1.The first author has contributed more than one paper related to the content of dissertation (Discussion, review, case report, as so on) at or above the provincial level (including provincial and above academic conferences, inter-school academic conferences, intra-school academic conferences, and Science and Technology Online three-star and above), and has been notified of publication.

2.Second or third author has contributed more than one paper related to the content of dissertation to the Chinese Science Citation Database ( Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) or above (including Medline, PubMed, SCI Journal and Chinese Medical Series) academic journals, and has been notified of publication. The tutor must be the first author;

3.The relevant content of the dissertation has been summarized and published in CSCD (including Medline, PubMed, SCI included magazine and Chinese medical series magazine) (as first author), and the magazine draft number is obtained.

4.Received the top 5 scientific and technological achievements awards at the provincial and ministerial level and the top 3 national invention patents.

5. When the doctoral tutor or the master tutor who undertakes the major projects of the National Natural Science Foundation or above believes that graduate students can use the papers to meet the needs of publishing high-level papers, the graduate students and tutors are supposed to jointly submit the exemption to the academic committee 2 months before the thesis defense, and the academic committee will review the dissertation and consider it has reached the level of master's degree.

The thesis published by the master's degree student must follow the relevant provisions of the paper's signature, that is, the Southeast University School of Medicine is the first communication author's signature unit, and the papers should be signed by their instructors. After leaving school, when publish articles related to dissertation, Southeast University School of Medicine should be signed as well, but notes can be used to indicate the author's current work unit. Other persons who are not related to the subject can not be signed.

The faculties and postgraduate tutors can put forward higher requirements on this basis, but they must be submitted to the medical degree evaluation sub-committee for approval and filing. And the relevant requirements must be notified to the students in writing.

The regulations above are implemented from the 2009 master's degree students and the 2005 seven-year clinical medicine students. Other grades can execute according to this regulation. The right of interpretation is at the Southeast University School of Medicine.
